Once, there was an orphan, Amit. He was very sad when his mother died right in front of him. He had never seen a father in his life. But he remembered what his mother always used to tell him “Don’t give up. Fight all your troubles in life with a bold face.” These words were also what his mother’s lips had last shaped before deceasing.amit had also learnt from her that everyone had some or the other qualities in him that were hidden. So, he set out to find out what qualities were in store for him.
For many days, he loitered around aimlessly, observing each and every object that was around him and trying to understand what each and every person was doing. He observed each and evry little thing that he could see- from a tadpole making its way through the rain to a roadroller making way for the people. He slowly began to understand everything by just giving one look at it. He saw many beggars and ragpickers and children on the roadside who lived in the garbage dumps and took things that could be sold. But he decided that such things would mean ruin of such a wonderful life. To make it meaningful, he decided to work hard and look out for opportunities. Then, he recollected the words of his mother that told him not to give up at any cost. After another month of keen observation, he set out to find his hidden qualities. This was a mammoth task. Amit began earning money by running simple errands. He worked in this way for one year and slowly he was able to build a hut by himself and live in it. He went through many difficulties but he faced them all boldly and so the difficulties had to cower down.
One day, Amit was earning money in his usual fashion when he overheard two people’s conversation. “Have you heard what the topic of the latest debate in the parliament was?” one asked the other. “Yes, the weather forecasters were speaking about the weather forecast. I have heard that a tsunami is going to strike the city. They have decided not to spread this news because that would mean help to be given by trhe government in transporting all the people to another place and that would ruin the economy of this place. That is why I am wishing to leave the city in a day or two.”
“I have also decided the same and in fact, I have already found a place where I can spend my time till the tsunami subsides.” Amit was shocked. He loved the city and the entire people for they were all loving and kind. He decided to warn each and every person and save as many people as he could. Having made the plan, he set out to carry it out. He went house to house, knocking at the door and warning the people of the coming storm. But nobody believed a person like him, a vagabond living on the roadside selling articles made out of waste materials, using rags to cover his body and living in a dishevelled hut in a lonely place. From every place, where he insisted everybody to believe him, he was thrown and kicked around. But he did not give up.
Once, when he dared to knock at the door of a well-to-do person, to his surprise, the owner of the bungalow himself came out. “Who are you? Please come in.” Seeing that the person was benevolent and genial, Amit entered the house. He said “This place is in danger. There is a tsunami coming up”- but he was interfered by the kind man’s generosity who offered him a refreshing drink and a cool seat under the fan. “Now tell me everything” and Amit gave away every detail and asked for help to save the city. The person consulted at many places and found that what Amit was telling was true. At once, he spread the news by telephone calls and posters and also reported it to a newspaper. The news spread far and wide and many people went away from the place.
The kind man asked Amit to go with him out of the city to take refuge but Amit had made up his mind. “No, I will stay back and help those who will not be able to go away from here.
On the day of disaster, Amit helped the rescue workers in saving the people and provided them with food and medical facilities. He even helped many animals and saved the lives of drowning creatures. He helped everybody that he could see. Once, he saw a drowning man and jumped into the water from the place where he had taken another person to shelter and saved the man. But he was not able to save himself. He was drowning. He remembered his mother and saw her smiling face. He knew he had done a great deed. Suddenly, a hand brushed his hand and pulled him up. When he revived, he could not see the person who had saved him. He asked everybody but nobody could tell him who he was who had saved him. The tsunami subsided, and all the people came back from where they had gone to take refuge. Amit was honoured greatly and he began living with the kind man who had believed in his words.
Bu the never came to know who it was who had saved him when he was drowning. Perhaps he would never come to know too because it was actually his mother’s hand that had pulled him out from the enormous mouth of death.
